Australia wins by 12-0 what a victroy

Like Doerner scored the tournament's second hat-trick as Australia notched up a record 12-0 scoreline.

Former world champions Australia improved on their Beijing Olympics scoreline against South Africa as they stormed to a 12-0 win in a Pool B match at the National Stadium in New Delhi on Thursday. Australia, who blanked the Africans 10-0 at Beijing a couple of years ago, also set the record of the most impressive scoreline in a World Cup match, surpassing Pakistan’s 12-3 win against New Zealand in 1982.

Like Doerner did the star turn with five goals, of which four came from penalty corners. Jamie Dwyer and Glenn Turner were on target twice each. Desmond Abbott, Matthew Butturini, and Fergus Kavanagh scored one each to further disgrace the South Africans. The Antipodeans, who still seemed upset over the defeat in their opener against England, took control of the proceedings right from the word go.

However, it took them 16 minutes to go up as Doerner converted the penalty corner with minimal fuss. Four minutes later, it was Glenn Turner’s turn to get into the thick of things.

Mark Knowles provided a beautiful pass from the centreline to Jamie Dwyer in the circle, who found Turner in no time and the latter’s accurate strike consummated their efforts. Desmond Abbott scored the third in the 34th minute before Doerner got his second on a penalty corner in the 34th minute. In the dying moments of the first half, Fergus Kavanagh made it 5-0, leaving the South African goalie Brendon Botes stunned at the dismal play from his side.

After the break, the sun further went down on the South Africans. Butturini scored the 6th for the Aussies nine minutes into the second half. Doerner completed his hat-trick five minutes later before Dwyer hit the back of the net twice in a span of two minutes. Turner scored his second in the 62nd minute and then Doerner struck another two to put an end to the South African misery. It was the Africans’ third defeat in-a-row and they now are very much out of the tournament.
