Surprise Win By England Beat Aus 3-2

European champions England provided the shocker on the opening day of the World Cup after they saw off world No.2 Australia 3-2.

England registered their first win against Australia in the quadrennial event after 35 years in a high-octane encounter at the Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi on Sunday

James Tindall scored twice while FIH young player of the year Ashley Jackson scored once in the English win. Aussie captain Jamie Dwyer did his best with two goals but in the end it was a disciplined England that went all the way.

Grant Schubert almost opened the account for the Australians in the first minute of the game itself as his reverse shot missed the near post narrowly. The Antipodeans continued attacking but the English defenders were equal to the task.

After failing to make the most of a couple of penalty corners, the Aussies finally broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute through captain Jamie Dwyer, who converted the penalty stroke after English goalie James Fair was found guilty of sitting on the ball. England, however, took no time to equalise as Jackson took a ripper of a penalty corner in the very next minute. James Tindall scored nine minutes later through a penalty corner to give a 2-1 lead to the European Champions.

After the break, the Champions Trophy winners stepped on the gas and won many penalty corners but a poor execution from the strikers up front undid them. Meanwhile, England turned in a top class show and made the most of the chances that came their way. Tindall scored his second goal of the night on the rebound in 46th minute to stun the few Aussie supporters in the arena. Dwyer pulled one back in the 65th minute to keep the Australian hopes alive but it turned out to be too late in the day.

England beat Bangladesh by 6 wickets

Comfortable victory for England.

After winning the toss and inviting the hosts to bat,
they did not start well conceding 63 runs in the first 9 overs. But they came back well and put the brakes on Bangladesh, especially Swann and Collingwood, who conceded just 71 runs in 17 overs amongst themselves with 3 wickets. The Bangladesh tried to fight back with a late middle order partnership but werwe eventually bowled out for 228 with 26 balls to spare.

Tamim Iqbal played a fabulous knock of 125

Swann was the pick of the bowlers with 3/32.

In reply, the English openers started off well adding 73 for the opening wicket,
but a little bit of a stutter caused some nervousness but Morgan and Collingwood added a brilliant 88 for the fourth wicket, sealing any hopes of a Bangladeshi victory.

Collingwood played a typical Collingwood innings, 75 unbeaten of a 100 balls,
picking up singles and twos and hitting the occasional boundary,
keeping the scoreboard ticking. The Bangladeshi spinners tried to make use of the slow track, but a Collingwood master-class came in their way.

Naeem Islam was the best bowler, picking up 3/49 in 10 overs.

World Cup Hockey 2010 - First match - Spain Wins

Spain made their title intention clear with a 4-2 win againt South Africa in the opening game of the 2010 hockey World Cup.

Both the teams were slow to get off the blocks, and it was South Africa who surprised with a goal in the 17th minute with a brilliant counter-attack down the right-flank which was finished by Julian Hykes by scooping the ball past Spain keeper Fransisco Cortes.

The Spaniards equalised almost immediately, when Roc Oliva scored after a reverse flick by Alex Fabregas came off the goalie. The 2008 Olympic silver-medalists took the lead in the very next minute, when David Alegre made it 2-1, scoring from a close range after he had dispossessed a defender inside the box.

The Spaniards kept up the pressure but could not get past South Africa keeper, who produced two excellent saves in the 23rd minute to deny Spain their third goal. But it was the African champions who drew level in the 29th after a diving Ian Haley tucked the ball in following a goalmouth scramble after a penalty corner. It was 2-2 at half-time.

The second half started brilliantly for the Spaniards. Captain Pol Amat almost put his team in front in the 37th minute, but could not convert from a tight angle. Spain kept up the pressure and it finally paid off when Rodrigo Garza made it 3-2 in the 46th minute, taking advantage off an error from keeper Erasmus Pieterse, who failed to clear a loose ball.

South Africa managed to earn two penalty corners in the second half, but failed to take advantage and saw Spain go 4-2 up in the 59th minute, when Pau Quemada slammed the ball into the top corner off a penalty corner

Both the teams played open and flowing hockey and created numerous chances. Spain were the better team in the second half. Backed by the crowd, the Proteas tried different things but could not find the back of the net in the second half. The Spaniards were deserving 4-2 winners.

Match-Fixing Claims

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) initially seemed to indicate that two players from the current squad were involved in match-fixing, but later insisted that the players, cases and incidents were old ones and that nobody from the current squad was involved. An ICC spokesperson though, to "The ICC is unaware of the existence of any such reports."

The day began with a report in the News, a Pakistan daily, that a player from the current squad was being investigated by a six-man inquiry committee over allegations of match-fixing on Pakistan's recent tour to Australia.

"I don't know how to react. I'd like to dedicate this double-hundred to the people of India for standing behind me for the last 20 years throughout the ups and downs. I was striking the ball well, the ball was coming on nicely and the target I felt was a good one was around 340-350. Fantastic batting by Dinesh Karthik, Yusuf and MS. If you look at the partnerships, every over there was a big shot played. Yusuf changed the momentum and MS finished well. I felt that when I was 175-plus and it was the 42nd over I had a chance, but I wasn't actually thinking of it. It was only when I got closer to it that I thought about it.

I have done the best I have for the team; there have been a few bad decisions I have made as a batsman, but I have always thought the best for the team.

Graeme Smith: "(captain SA )

It would have been terrific if we had hung around. England did it couple of times against us but credit must be given to MS an his boys. We should have batted better in the first innings. We then came and dropped a few catches. You have to give credit to all the boys for trying. The pitch (here) was still good. Batting on last day in India was always going to be difficult. Special words to Amla .. he has been outstanding through the series. He is become our glue at no 3. I don't think any of us have seen him play better. He has a calm mind and has been working very hard. Great to see it coming together for me. The last two trios to India ... I can't complain. We have drawn the series.. not every team can say that. Hopefully next time we come out here, we can go one step forward. But next India will be coming to South Africa later this year. They will want to win at our home and we want to do well. I would like to thank the crowd for all the support."

Man of the match and the Man of the series is Hashim Amla::

"I am feeling tired. I am very disappointed in losing this game. Me and Morne were just having some fun out there. He played really well and so did Parnell earlier. Fortunately, Morne and Parnell are decent batsmen and took lots of pressure of me. I am being just grateful that I have had a good tour. I have now the one-days to look forward to .Unfortunately we have lost the game ... It was a very good wicket. we could have saved it; there wasn't' anything unplayable from the wicket."

MS Dhoni: (captain indian )

IT was important for us to bat just once and four of us got hundreds. The bowlers were great. The wicket did nothing on the first day but Bhaji and mishy bowled well. Then today we didn't have Zaheer and the bowlers bowled really well. The amount of effort the three bowlers put in today, we desperately wanted to be on the winning side. In Indian cricket you are always under pressure. Ishant is getting rhtyhm back, Mishra too bowled very well. And Harbhajan too .. after Anil bhai's retirement, there is lots of pressure on him and he bowled really well."

Lunch Break- Indian little control

India take 2 wickets in this morning
